The author systematically investigates the formation of barium stars and suggests four channels for their formation: wind accretion, wind exposure, stable Roche-lobe overflow, and common-envelope ejection, leading to a comprehensive model for barium star formation. Monte Carlo simulations of the model will be carried out and the results will be compared with the observations in paper II.
