It is shown that the cross-helicity effect facilitates rapid growth of
the large scale magnetic field in young galaxies. This field then acts
as a seed for the standard alpha Omega -type dynamo at later stages.
This mechanism may be responsible for the relatively strong magnetic
fields observed in young high redshift galaxies.
