The problem of understanding the presence of several high excitation emission lines of Na I in the late-time spectrum of SN 1987A is examined, and a Bowen-type fluorescence mechanism is offered to account for them. Although the suggested Mg I pumping is potentially operative in the conditions in which sodium atoms find themselves in the SN's ejecta and can account for the photon rate in the highest excitation observed line, it cannot be definitely established that Mg I pumping is the causative excitation mechanism. In spite of this failure to show that Mg I pumping of Na I is operative in the ejecta of SN 1987A, the analysis of this coupling appears to establish its physical plausibility.
