Near IR photometry of stars with reflection nebulosity (R-stars) associated with the Serpens dark cloud is presented. A reexamination of earlier slit spectrograms of four bright R-stars confirms the luminosity classes and spectral types previously reported. In an attempt to detect the star responsible for the red nebulosity in the vicinity of star 17, ten IR sources are reported and their probable natures are discussed. It is shown that this study has significantly extended the list of well-observed R-stars and consequently it is believed that the distance estimate given for the Serpens dark cloud is the best currently available.
