The condition of electric current continuity is not compatible with the condition of neutrality for media with inhomogeneous anisotropic electric conductivities like the auroral ionosphere. By assuming electric current continuity, the ionospheric charge density distribution which establishes the electric field patterns that are generally considered to be mapped from the magnetosphere is discussed.
