The Wolf-Rayet star HD 50896 has long been known to be variable. It has been postulated that this variability is a consequence of a neutron star companion. Using recent determinations of some Wolf-Rayet star parameters, and more detailed physics than previously used, the expected X-ray luminosity of the proposed WR plus compact object system HD 50896, is calculated. The results indicate that, while the dense stellar wind of the WR star will absorb a large fraction of the X-rays emitted from the accretion on to the neutron star, the observed X-ray luminosity should be considerably higher than is actually observed, indicating that the variability seen in HD 50896 is due to some other reason. The origin of the variability is discussed.
