Reflection profiles obtained by a seismic technique are used to study the subsurface properties of the Haughton impact crater. Imaging of the western flank of the Haughton structure with a 10.25-km-long multifold reflection profile resulted in the mapping of 10 acoustic discontinuities in the stratified sedimentary target rocks. The average seismic velocity of over 6000 m/s exhibited by the Paleozoic strata is an indication of the high elastic strength of the undisturbed impact area. The identification of normal faults 3 km west of the faulted annulus suggests a structural diameter of 24 km. The surface morphologically distinct ring zones are not shown to have seismically recognizable subsurface signatures.
