The paper surveys the current state of research on the problem of the content of vibrationally excited nitrogen in the upper atmosphere and its effects on the ionospheric structure and dynamics. Particular attention is given to processes determining the population of vibrational levels of the N2 molecule, and to calculations of the vibrational temperature of N2 molecules.
