The observed synchrotron emission from electrons near a plane strong shock front is calculated, assuming a steady-state diffusive shock acceleration mechanism and a finite extent of the emission region. The emitted synchrotron spectrum for a nonrelativistic shock is found to be flat at low frequencies, to steepen above some break frequency, and to cut off at a high-frequency limit. For emission regions larger than the mean free path of the electrons, the break frequency is shown to be determined by the losses suffered by the electrons in crossing the emission region, independent of the details of the acceleration process. The cut-off frequency is determined by the balance between losses and acceleration gains, allowing the evaluation of the mean free path and its momentum dependence from observation.
