A high-resolution (0.057 cm-1) spectrum in the M band (4.6 μm) has been obtained for the infrared source W33A. Absorption lines of the fundamental vibrational band (υ = 0-1) of 12CO and 13CO demonstrate gas with two distinct temperatures: low-J lines are formed in gas with T ≈ 23K, while higher J lines are formed in gas with T ≈ 120K. The authors identify the cold gas as the W33 molecular cloud core and the warm gas as gas near W33A. The authors also obtain the column density of gas phase CO and the first direct value for the solid CO to gas phase CO abundance ratio for a single line of sight.
