This paper reviews observations made over recent years that have led to the identification of many new galactic supernova remnants (SNRs) and have clarified the nature of several objects that had been thought to be SNRs. A revised reference catalogue of 155 galactic SNRs is presented, complete with notes on the newly identified remnants, those objects no longer thought to be SNRs, the questionable objects in the catalogue, and possible candidate SNRs. The selection effects applicable to the identification of galactic SNRs are discussed, with particular reference to the limitations that they impose upon statistical studies.
