A Fabry-Perot tilting filter photometer, interfaced with a Dahl-Kirkham telescope, was designed for measuring methane concentration and its rotational temperature by isolating several lines in the g nu 3 bands of the comet Kohoutek infrared spectrum. This assembly was flown on board a Convair 990 research aircraft. No measurable signals of methane emission were found; however, the upper limit for methane production, several orders of magnitude less than originally predicted for a first close approach of Kohoutek to the sun, could be calculated from the detection limit.
