Be Stars: Infrared Excesses

Scientific paper

For 143 B and Be stars the inclination angle of the rotational axis i and the reduced angular rotational velocity ω/ωc have been determinated separately by many authors. For 53 stars from this sample the observational data, characterizing the envelope, are given. The authors made a search for the correlation between the observations characterizing the envelopes and tried to find out whether these observations depend on the rotational parameters of the underlying star. They found that for intensive mass loss from the central star the rotational angular velocity ω/ωc ≥ 0.5 is needed. It is shown that IR excesses, emission in Balmer lines and linear polarization originate in the same regions of envelopes. The lack of correlation between envelope characteristics and i is an indication that the envelopes are thin for the radiation of the central star at these wavelengths. It is proposed that the stars 6 Cep and 23 Tau have cold dust envelopes with Tmax ≡ 100K.
