The existence of large-scale solitons in a homogeneous equilibrium self-gravitating gas layer representing a gas subsystem of a flat spiral galaxy is investigated analytically. It is shown that such solitons can exist and may experience a modulational instability leading to the partition of a nonlinear monochromatic wave into separate wave packets. The possibility is proven that two-dimensional nonlinear waves will collapse under certain conditions, and it is found that such collapse develops into a singularity when the basic equations are solved over some finite period of time.
