Very sensitive constraints can be placed on the gravitational wave energy density during and after the epoch of last scattering of the cosmic microwave background radiation. Observational limits on the temperature anisotropies that would be induced by the Sachs-Wolfe effect then give spectrum-dependent constraints on early universe processes that generate long wavelength gravitational waves. In particular, a derived upper bound on the Hubble constant during an inflationary era, implies a symmetry breaking scale MX < 9×1015GeV.Similarly, cosmic strings with tensions Gμ > 1×10-5 violate the microwave background limits.
