The observational techniques used in infrared astronomy are discussed. Modern infrared detectors respond to the average power of the incident photons without regard to their phase, coherence, or direction. The atmospheric windows used in ground-based observations are listed. Aircraft, balloons, and rockets have been used for IR observations. The known IR sources in our Galaxy and their characteristics are discussed. These sources include IR stars, various types of nebula, and the nucleus of the Galaxy. There are only three luminous infrared galaxies besides our Galaxy: M82, NGC253, and NGC 1068. These have been studied in some detail. The relationship observed between the radio and IR continua of galactic nuclei and quasars is explained. The energetics of galactic IR emission is discussed. The possibility that the cosmic background has a component in the wavelength range 3-300 microns is considered.
