The authors present a photometric study of more than one thousand stars in the central region of 47 Tuc. The investigation, based upon CCD observations obtained at the 1.5 m (Danish) and 2.2 m telescopes of ESO (La Silla), includes the core region and extends to about 2arcmin from the cluster centre. UBV colour-magnitude and colour-colour diagrams for stars down to 2 magnitudes below the horizontal branch are presented. The behaviour of these diagrams is found to fit well with those of the external region. The location of the horizontal branch and the luminosity function for the bright stars also agree well with those found in the external region. These results do not support previously reported colour or chemical radial gradients.
