The orbit of the Proton 4 satellite is redetermined at 25 epochs from about 1600 U.S. Navy, optical, and radar observations, using an improved version of a computer program for orbit refinement and assigning more realistic a priori accuracies to the Navy observations. Effects of the 31:2 resonance on the satellite orbit are analyzed, values of lumped 31st-order geopotential coefficients are determined, and values of atmospheric rotation rate are obtained for the last four months of the satellite's life. The results show that an observed 'dip' in inclination was the result of a strong resonance effect associated with tesseral harmonics in the geopotential of order 31 at the time when the ground track of the satellite over earth was repeating every two days after 31 revolutions. Mean, morning, and afternoon-evening values are also derived for the atmospheric rotation rate at a height near 260 km.
