The rotation of the earth was used for many centuries as a time standard. However, investigations conducted with the aid of atomic clocks showed that this rotation is subject to small irregularities. For this reason, the emphemeris time, which is independent of the rotation of the earth, was introduced in 1958. The characteristics of the revolution of the earth around the sun are investigated, taking into account the nonuniformity of the motion of the earth. A correction for the time indication provided by the solar clock can be given for each moment of time on the basis of a mathematical model, which describes the motion of the earth. This model makes it possible to define a 'mean sun'. The equation of time is related to differences between the hour angle of the real sun and the 'mean sun'. The characteristics of the equation of time are illustrated with the aid of graphs.
