A distribution function of optical thicknesses is determined for a molecular gas layer in a statistical framework. Statistical results on infrared radiation transfer in a molecular gas are compared with exact results. The statistical band model is extended to the case of radiative transfer in a molecular gas of variable temperature. The results can be used to calculate radiative fluxes in planetary atmospheres.
