Available data on the temperature of the diffuse nebulae are appreciably higher than the temperatures obtained by theoretical calculations when solar abundances of the heavier elements are used. Another discrepancy between observation and theory is related to the ionization structure. It is suggested that the presence of dust in the nebula can explain both of these phenomena. Attention is given to helium-hydrogen profile temperatures, the depletion of heavy elements, and details concerning the ionization structure.
