The large-scale distribution of interstellar matter in spiral galaxies is studied on the basis of density-wave theory. The nonlinear response of the interstellar gas and the formation of galactic shock waves with two stable phases are investigated. The density-wave model is applied to a sample of twenty four external galaxies; a categorization is made of spiral galaxies; and the implications of the luminosity-class and Hubble-type of spiral galaxies are considered.
