The motion of an injected charged-particle beam with very simple distribution functions in the near magnetosphere (L less than 6) is investigated analytically. Consideration is given to the simplest steady-state case where the distribution function depends only on the integrals of motion, the case where the particles have an energy spread, and the case of a monochromatic particle distribution with an angular spread. Pulsed beam injection leading to an unsteady-state particle distribution is also examined, and pulse shapes are computed for long and short pulses. A formula is obtained for the beam density after complete mixing.
