A new model of the interstellar gas near the solar system has been developed to compute the emission line profiles and integrated emission rates from hydrogen (Lyman-alpha at 1216 A) and helium (584 A). Allowance is made for the modification of a Maxwell-Boltzmann velocity distribution by solar gravity, radiation pressure, and charge exchange or photoionization loss processes. For hydrogen, the inequality of radiation pressure and gravitational attraction causes important changes which must be taken into account in the interpretation of line profile measurements.
