The development of instruments for UV stellar spectroscopy since 1965 is discussed. Reasons for using gratings rather than Fourier techniques in such instruments are considered, and advantages of multichannel detection systems are noted. Several instruments designed for rocketborne, balloonborne, and spaceborne UV spectroscopic observations are compared on the basis of two factors of merit.
