Observational evidence suggesting that some planet-crossing asteroids may be comets which have lost their ice component due to the sun's heat and assumed tighter orbits is characterized in a general review. Consideration is given to asteroid Oljato (discovered in 1947), which has a highly eccentric orbit, is associated with a meteor shower and with seven interplanetary-magnetic-field disturbances, and exhibits an unusual visible spectrum and radar signature. Other possible ex-comets include Adonis and 1983TB, while the comets Arend-Rigaux, Neujmin 1, and Encke are considered likely candidates to become asteroids in the future. The need for a crossing-asteroid mechanism like the comet hypothesis is discussed in the light of the failure of celestial-mechanics simulations to explain the present number of such asteroids by perturbation of the orbits of normal belt asteroids.
