The earth is discussed as a machine undergoing cycles. The movements of water, carbon dioxide, and calcium in chemical cycles, and of the continental crust, are described. The changes in the cycles over the history of the planet and the changes that will affect the cycles in the future are considered. The results of a greenhouse effect which may be caused by increasing concentrations of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere are covered. Other perturbations in the cyclic behavior of the earth are discussed, including changes due to continental drift, the ice ages, and catastrophic collisions with meteorites. The interrelation of small and large-scale studies of the earth, and of the roles of different branches of science is emphasized.
