The linear-polarization spectra p(lambda) observed in several Herbig Ae/Be stars may in part be attributable to electron scattering in a circumstellar envelope with a magnetic field. A method developed by Gnedin and Silant'ev (1980) to allow for the effect of Faraday rotation upon the emergent polarization yields field strengths of about 100-1000 gauss, depending on the model adopted for the gaseous envelope. Changes in the field parameters may explain the polarimetric variability of HD 200775.
