An observation of H92-alpha radio recombination-line emission from the irregular galaxy M82 is reported. The electron temperature of the emitting gas is estimated to be approximately 4000 K, and it is suggested that the observed H92-alpha line arises in hot ionized gas not substantially removed from LTE. The Ly-alpha luminosity of M82 is computed as 3 by 10 to the 43rd power erg/s, which results in an IR/Ly-alpha luminosity ratio of about 6 (a typical value for Milky Way H II regions). It is proposed that the large IR luminosity observed for M82 is due to the heating of dust by young stellar associations, the same process that generates IR emission in Milky Way H II regions.
