It is shown that the behavior of the dwarf nova SS Cygni is in close agreement with theoretical predictions of dynamically unstable states of a red star when it fills its Roche lobe, and is in conflict with the assumptions of early disk instability models. A statistical analysis of the star's outbursts is presented, obtaining the average width of outbursts, an excess of very narrow outbursts, correlation of burst width with visual magnitude, a correlation between width and following cycle-time, and a lack of correlation between width and preceding cycle time. An outburst energy-period relation is analytically obtained for the following quiescent cycle of a red component instability model and compared with the observed eruption properties of SS Cygni.
