On June 12, 1963 a stony meteorite fell in the village of Kerhartice near Usti nad Orlici in Czechoslovakia. The meteorite is listed under No. 397 in the meteorite collection of the National Museum in Prague. The present investigation is concerned with the first chemical and petrological study of the meteorite. The Usti stone is well crystallized and almost glass-free. The meteorite consists of 81.3 percent silicates (olivine, pyroxenes, feldspars plus phosphates), 9.9 percent metals, 8 percent troilite, and 0.8 percent chromite (and ilmenite) by weight. Three polished thin sections were prepared for petrographic and electron microprobe analyses of individual minerals. An additional piece was also selected for chemical analyses. On the basis of the obtained results, the Usti nad Orlici chondrite is classified as a L6 chondrite.
