The evolution law of galactic density waves is derived on the basis of the Boltzmann equation of stellar dynamics. The results are compared with those obtained from previous work based on the theory of fluid mechanics. It is shown that the results derived from the theory of fluid mechanics represent a reasonably close approximation to the more rigorous solution based on stellar dynamics.
