Coude spectrograms (20 A/mm) of the recently identified YY Orionis star S CrA are analyzed. Most metallic lines show inverse P Cygni profiles with undisplaced emission and strongly redshifted absorption components. The He I and He II lines were observed in emission only, having no measurable line shift and surprisingly narrow profiles. The Ca II resonance lines contain a sharp blueshifted absorption component of interstellar or circumstellar origin. A highly complex and strongly variable line structure is observed for the Balmer lines. From a comparison with calculated Balmer line profiles of protostellar models, it is concluded that the observed complex profiles can at least in principle be explained by a combination of emission from the collapsing envelope and radiative effects of the hot shock-cooling region. The observed time variations seem to be produced by density fluctuations in the infalling envelope. It is suggested that these fluctuations are generated or amplified in the outer part of the envelope by radiation-pressure effects in resonance lines originating from the shock-cooling region.
