A digital microdensitometer is used to measure radial velocities and Zeeman shifts from high-dispersion coude spectrograms. An ensemble of programs for a computer system was developed to calculate line positions. In so doing, the programs compensate for nonlinear table motion of the microdensitometer, nonlinear dispersion on the plates, and nonperpendicularity of the spectrograph slit. The use of an additional glass scale near the spectrogram allows positional accuracy to within plus or minus 3 microns. A comparison with other mechanical measurements on six coude plates of HR 5049 (HD 116458) show the digital-microdensitometer technique to be more consistent, precise, and objective. Microdensitometer measurements of all 12 plates available for HR 5049 show it to be a spectroscopic binary with a period of 70.651 days.
