In the Galaxy stars are born in cloud complexes of gas and dust at temperatures of about 10 K. There are many well recognized signposts of recent star formation. A brief description of young stellar objects is presented. Walker (1956) was the first observer who conducted detailed photometric and spectroscopic studies of the stellar population associated with young groups of stars. Attention is given to OB star clusters, Herbig emission stars, Herbig Haro objects, T Tauri stars, infrared sources, H II emission and molecular hotspots, H2O and OH masers, and energetic molecular outflows.
