One of the most enigmatic stars in the Galaxy is the star P Cygni (HD193237, HR7763). It was discovered on August 18, 1600 when it suddenly brightened to about third magnitude. After three centuries of variability, the star's magnitude has been more or less constant at V approximately 4.9 since 1900. The present investigation is concerned with the determination of the effective temperature, the distance, and the radius of P Cygni on the basis of a comparison of its energy distribution with that of other supergiants. It is suggested that in the case of P Cygni a star of originally 60 solar masses or slightly less has evolved into the red supergiant region. During this phase the star ejects a considerable amount of mass, either in the form of a dense stellar wind or in the form of a number of separate outbursts.
