The Coordinated Data Analysis Workshop 6 (CDAW 6) provided an opportunity for studying the magnetospheric processes associated with magnetospheric substorm activity on the basis of one of the largest magnetospheric data collections ever assembled. The present investigation is concerned with observations of the geomagnetic field at geosynchronous orbit by the two satellites GOES 2 and GOES 3 during the periods of substorm activity on March 22, 1979. It is found that a simple model proposed by McPherron et al. (1973) explains most aspects of the observations. The wedge model of nightside substorm current can be employed to interpret generally the observed magnetic field variations. However, it is necessary to include the effects of plasma sheet thinning and region 1 currents flowing on the plasma sheet boundary to understand the events in detail.
