The suitability of a sandwich of coarsely woven translucent polypropylene laminated between thin outer layers of white and black polypropylene to act as a large-area, low-cost filter for FIR solar studies has been investigated. The IR transmission spectrum of the material over the 2-500 micron range was determined. The material exhibits transmittance of greater than 60 percent at wavenumbers less than 100/cm, greater than 50 percent out to 200/cm, and less than 5 percent for wavenumbers greater than 2500/cm. The combined black and white polypropylene layers render the material effectively opaque at wavelengths less than 2.5 microns. A balloon-flown specimen showed higher transmission in the mid-IR range due to stretching of the material on the mounting frame. Local interference within the material produces widely spaced 'channel' fringes which cause minimum inconvenience in spectral analysis since the thickness of the layers is small.
