Real differences exist between the specific globular cluster frequencies S observed in different galaxies. In E and SO galaxies these frequencies are found to be an order of magnitude higher than they are in spirals. Among elliptical galaxies and lenticulars there is no correlation between S and luminosity, but some indication of a dependence on cluster environment. Central galaxies in rich clusters (such as M87 in Virgo, NGC 3311 in Hydra I and perhaps NGC 1399 in Fornax I) appear to be particularly rich in globulars. Possible implications of this result for theories of galaxy and cluster formation are discussed. It is suggested that the special characteristics of the central cluster galaxies might be due to the fact that explosions in such objects triggered the formation of rich clusters.
