The deuterium enrichment of HCO(+) molecular ions in molecular clouds was calculated in relation to the abundance of the gas phase metals such that DCO(+)/HCO(+) varies as delta exp -1/3. A positive galactic gradient was found. On the basis of the abundance calculations, it is suggested that the interstellar deuterium abundance may be lower in the central part of the Galaxy. The metal abundance may be as much as 10 times higher than near the sun.
