The nonlinear growth of condensation instability, the last stage in the cooling of an interstellar medium, is considered theoretically. The incipient nonlinear stages of thermal instability are described by a solution to the gasdynamics equations of Field's (1965) short-wave approximation. It is shown that the thermally unstable gas is efficiently cooled by the growth of nonlinear density perturbations. It is suggested that the cooling and contraction of regions containing unstable gas may lead to the formation of interstellar clouds.
