A reasonable first approximation in modeling the pulsar magnetosphere is based on the assumption that the magnetic field is the dipole field of the star. Later, corrections can take into account the magnetic field generated by the magnetospheric currents. The procedure to be employed in the modeling of the electric field is much less clear. The corotational part of the field is generated by rotation of the magnetic field structure. In the present investigation, it is shown that knowledge of the function of the gauge-invariant potential Phi required to support corotating particles constrains the global qualitative forms which Phi can take in axisymmetric magnetospheres. The next step will involve the establishment of an analytic or numerical global model for Phi, taking into account the considered qualitative form.
