The spectrum of a quantum-mechanical system such as a one-electron atom
is modified by the gravitational field of a distant massive body. A
simple treatment of the two-body problem in a curved space allows a
direct evaluation of the gravitational red shift, obtained otherwise by
intuitive arguments.
