The kinematics of the nucleus of the giant Sc galaxy M101 and the implications for its mass are discussed, and the galaxy's emission line spectrum and chemical composition are addressed. High-resolution spectroscopic observations of H-alpha in the nucleus and other emission knots in the nuclear region reveal a velocity gradient of about 17 km/s/arcsec across the nuclear region. The H-alpha contour map of the nucleus itself shows an obvious east-west velocity gradient. The velocity profile of the central condensation has a FWHM of 47 km/s and an rms dispersion of 22 km/s. The mass of the central condensation is found to be only 10 to the 6.7th solar masses. The high concentration of molecular gas in the nuclear region, combined with the composite nature of the nucleus and the presence of other emission regions, suggests a region of active star formation.
