I HAVE now examined Mr. Akeley's cast of the gorilla's foot kindly forwarded by Dr. Gregory to the British Museum (Natural History). I regret that I am, in consequence, unable to agree with Dr. Gregory's opinion that the photograph published by Mr. Akeley in the World's Work (reproduced here as Fig. 3) gives ``a very fair representation'' of this cast. I am, on the contrary, confirmed in my condemnation of the photograph, and endorse Mr. Pocock's statement (NATURE, December 8, p. 827) that it is ``entirely misleading'', since it suggests a resemblance between the hallux of the gorilla and that of man which does not exist. I here submit a photograph of the same cast taken under the direction of Dr. Vevers at the Zoological Society's laboratory (Fig. 4). Proper care has, in this case, been given to the direction of the light falling upon the cast. The deceptive character of Mr. Akeley's photograph is obvious when it is compared with that now submitted.
