It is frequently stated (particularly in the popular literature) that the general relativity predicts the existence of black holes. This is not true: general relativity allows the existence of black holes but do not "predict" them. It is by no means the same! Black holes may exist if there is a real physical process leading to their formation. Confrontation with astronomical observations is absolutely crucial but frustatingly difficult.
