Consideration is given to the factors influencing detector optimization for the Very Large Telescope design that is currently under study by the European Southern Observatory. Also discussed is the design of the instrument/detector interface. The two generic types of detector considered are CCDs and Photon Counting Systems, and comparisons are made between their SNR values for equivalent performance levels, their accuracy of calibration, detector field sizes, and characteristics in low resolution spectroscopy, high resolution/multiobject spectroscopy, and direct field imaging. Also noted are detector-and-slit matching problems, and limiting magnitude characteristics.
