A variation of the atmospheric Cerenkov technique has been developed to search for very high energy gamma-ray transients from galactic sources. The Whipple Observatory 10 m optical reflector has been used to observe the previously established very high energy gamma-ray sources, Cygnus X-3 and PSR 0531. A total of 54 h on Cygnus X-3 and 20 h on PSR 0531 were accumulated: the data has been searched for transients of 4-24 min duration. Some evidence was found for the detection of two outbursts of eight minutes duration from the direction of Cygnus X-3; these would have corresponded to fluxes of 8 x 10 to the -10th photons/sq cm per sec of energy 4 x 10 to the 11th eV (approximately 25 pct of the cosmic ray background). There was no evidence for the detection of transients from PSR 0531.
