Brief review of the most important results of using the model-atmosphere method to construct brightness curves of close binary systems, with particular attention being paid to the synthesis of such curves for semidetached systems. A description is given of some of the early models of brightness curves, tracing the idea of using the model-atmosphere method for this purpose back to Sobieski (1965), who studied systems of Algol type, and then dwelling at some length on the work of Rucinski, who first studied quantitatively the effects of changes in the brightness of an asymmetrical component of a binary star. The application by several groups of American and Canadian scientists of the work begun by Rucinski to the complete synthesis of brightness curves of eclipsed binaries is then discussed, including the work of Hill and Hutchings in Canada and that of Wilson and Devinney and also that of Wood in the U.S. Finally, a summary is given of work done by the author and Toomasson on possible departures from local thermal equilibrium of the photospheric layers of the secondary component of a binary system.
