The details of a method, amplitude interferometry, for obtaining high angular resolution through the earth's atmosphere and the results obtained with an instrument based on this theory are presented. The theory behind the method is developed in increasing stages of complexity as atmospheric and instrumental effects are added to the basic theory, and limits are placed upon certain parameters which affected the design of the actual instrument. A detailed description of the interferometer is presented. Extensive laboratory work was performed to determine some instrument parameters and to search for possible systematic errors. The results of observations of a laboratory source showed that the operation was as predicted. It was also shown that the instrument operates in a reasonable fashion when used in conjunction with a telescope and in presence of the atmosphere.
